The product in question is a silicone finishing agent, a family of polydimethylsiloxane-based compounds applied in the final stages of textile production. Contrary to popular belief, the goal is not to coat fibers with a noticeable layer, but to lubricate individual yarns so they glide past one another with less friction. The result is a hand feel that ranges from luxuriously silky to subtly supple, depending on the formulation and the substrate.
Chemically, these agents are built around a flexible siloxane backbone terminated with reactive or emulsified side chains. They are free of alkylphenol ethoxylates, formaldehyde, and heavy metals, and they require lower curing temperatures, cutting mill energy use by roughly 12 %. Some mills even reclaim residual liquor, filtering and reusing up to 80 % of the bath.
